Today, climate change and the mass extinction crisis threatens the existence of all life on Earth - including, of course, ourselves - and makes us aware of our part in it, as well as our consciousness of the absolute nature of human transience. Our culture is a predominantly scientific one and, since the Seventeenth century Scientific Revolution and the European Enlightenment of the Eighteenth, we have lost the sense of mystery and sacredness of the universe which has, until modern times, given meaning to life.
